Under a clear, brilliant blue sky, the Atlantic reveals its full power. Waves roll in one after another, spreading white foam along the shore, while a delicate veil of sea mist follows the contours of the cliffs, gradually fading into the horizon.
A fascinating contrast between the ocean’s raw energy and the softness of a white veil that seems to rest gently upon the coastline.
One of those moments when nature simply invites us to stop, observe, and appreciate its beauty.

Thomas Heaton captures something here that I think a lot of us who shoot landscapes know but rarely talk about: that tension between wanting solitude in the field and the reality of what a solo mountain trip actually feels like. It's honest in a way that most landscape photography content isn't, and I appreciated that more than any single composition he shows.
This isn't the typical image you see of a solar eclipse, although I captured those too. I had the idea of capturing it as part of a landscape to see what the results would be. Took me a while to find a suitable location, but Lake Chatuge in north Georgia for the 2017 total eclipse won the honor. I had to use an extreme wide angle (15mm) to get enough of the scene in, and this image is actually taken at the moment of "the Ring", but I think it turned out pretty well.
As the sun disappears beyond the horizon, the Atlantic continues its endless movement. Waves reach the shore, leaving delicate reflections of the last golden light on the wet sand.
A quiet moment in the sky, but never in the ocean.
Late February, beside a small lake in Central Macedonia. Vrytton Lake. With rich flora and fauna.
A moment when everything seemed to come together: the waves crashing against the rocks, seagulls flying above the ocean, and sunlight breaking through the clouds.
I was watching the birds and waiting for the waves. Then, for a brief moment, the light, the sea and the seagulls became part of the same scene.
The Atlantic is never still, and that is part of its beauty.

Before the Last Ray — Atlantic Ocean
Before the final ray of sunlight disappeared, several golden beams broke through the clouds, illuminating the Atlantic Ocean and creating beautiful reflections on the water.
These photographs capture two different moments of the same changing sky, taken with two different smartphones. Interestingly, the earlier photograph appears darker, even though the natural light was not as dim as the image suggests.
The differences in brightness and contrast are partly due to each phone’s automatic camera processing.

On my way home, I noticed several rays of sunlight breaking through the clouds over the Atlantic. I stopped to capture the moment, but the sky was already closing in.
By the time I took this photograph, only one ray remained, illuminating the horizon above the rolling waves.

It's been far too long since I've spent any time shooting on Lake Lanier. The past couple of cold mornings have been creating a evaporative mist over the lake surface. I carved out a few minutes this morning to stop by and capture it. Nice to spend some time by the shore again.
First, it was the waves that caught my attention. They seemed to offer perfect conditions for surfing, an almost constant presence along this coastline.
Then, in the distance, a sailboat appeared, tiny against the vastness of the Atlantic.
I waited a little, watching the waves take shape, until I found the moment when the breaking surf and the sailboat came together in the same scene.
Between those who challenge the waves, those who sail towards the horizon, and those who simply stand and admire, the ocean reveals different ways of experiencing its beauty.

On the coast of Ericeira, the Atlantic reveals its strength in an endless succession of waves. Each breaking wave carves a new path across the water, while the cliffs remain motionless, witnesses to the energy of the ocean.

The Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis & Harris in Scotland. The stones were erected over 5,000 years ago with stones that are among the oldest on the planet at over 3 billion years old. I was pleased with how my camera was able to capture the dynamic range of the highlights to shadow detail.
