Landscape Photography

Thomas Heaton gave himself a constraint I've been curious about for a while, and the results say more about intention than aperture. What got me is how quickly it forces you to think about what you're actually isolating in a landscape instead of defaulting to f/11 and letting sharpness do the work.

Thomas Heaton's patience in the field mirrors something I recognize from long nights waiting for cloud breaks. This one is worth your time just for how honestly he works with conditions instead of fighting them, finding compositions in weather most people would pack up and drive away from.

Upward Perspective presents a view from beneath slender aspen trunks reaching toward a bright, cloud-speckled sky. I photographed this while visiting the town of Ophir (Oh-fear), Colorado a few years back. My friend and I were looking for the "Dancing Aspens", which are aspens with curved trunks. Ophir is a former mining town, perched at 9,600 feet, with fewer than 200 residents. it offers some of the most vibrant aspen groves in the state. My friend and I were not able to get to the "Dancing Aspens" because we didn't have 4-wheel drive!!

Thomas Heaton handles the "gear doesn't matter" debate with more nuance than most, and it's refreshing. He gets at something I've found true in astrophotography: gear genuinely doesn't matter until it does, and knowing where that line sits for your own work saves a lot of wasted energy.

Bear Island is an undeveloped 12,021-acre barrier island and wildlife management area between Charleston and Beaufort, SC. Though a great place for hiking and fishing, it is well known for its birding opportunities as a wide variety of birds inhabit the area.

The tranquil beauty of autumn with this landscape artwork. Majestic mountains rise in the background, their peaks kissed by soft clouds, while a serene river reflects the vibrant hues of golden fall aspen foliage.

I love how the light changes the dunes as it sets , from the soft warm tones of the golden hour to the pastels of twilight
