Don’t Just Study It. Change It

Ben is one of my students that has been taking private painting lessons from me for a few years now.

He got to stand in front of the original American Gothic in Chicago…

…and then came back to the studio and made his own version.

But here’s my favorite part… he didn’t just copy it. He thought about it. He made a choice. He added hay to the pitchfork.

That right there is the difference between following instructions and becoming an artist.

Study the masters.

Then make it yours.

That’s where the magic actually happens.

Now- can you find where he hid his name?

Ben’s choice to add hay to the pitchfork reveals the moment creativity transcends replication. That personal touch is what fuels artistic growth and community.

This is so well said. That one small decision changed everything. It’s like the moment he stopped trying to “get it right” and started making it his. That’s the shift I hope every student experiences… and he walked right into it.

The hay on the pitchfork. That is the whole lesson right there. Ben looked at a masterpiece and instead of being intimidated by it he engaged with it. He made a decision. That is the moment a student becomes an artist. Love this Alana.

This gave me chills. That’s exactly what happened. He didn’t just look at it… he stepped into it and made a choice. That little bit of hay turned into a whole moment. Thank you for putting that into words so perfectly.

He's amazing!

He really is. And the coolest part is watching him realize it for himself. That’s the moment everything starts to shift.

Adorable. Signed his name on the red building in the upper right. So encouraging to see kids embrace art! Well done Alana!

Yes!! I love that you noticed that. Signing his name right on it felt like him saying “this is mine.” Those little moments are everything. Thank you so much!

Nope, can't find his name! I nearly stood on my head looking!

He put his name on the red barn:

LOVE LOVE LOVE this! I've taught fine art to Kindergartener through 8th graders for years, and did the same thing. Seeing how they engaged personally with the art and creating their own interpretation, meaningful and authentic to them would just make my heart soar!! (We should set up a community for Artists who teach children! I have learned so much from their open spirits and courage to embrace the unknown in art! It definitely has informed my own practice!)---oh wait! there is already an art educator community!

Yes!! That’s exactly it. When they realize they don’t have to copy it perfectly, something clicks and their personality shows up on the canvas. It’s like watching confidence happen in real time. I love that you’ve seen the same thing. And you’re so right, they teach us just as much as we teach them.

Thank you!! That was my favorite part too. Ben really made it his own… even added a little hay to the pitchfork like “yep, this is mine now.” 😄

Ben also visited the Monet exhibit, but was not really impressed. 😂
