What a GREAT shot Tom!
I want to hear about the adventure to get to the location for this shot. Haha.
Have you been down to the Cumbres and Toltec at all?
Another great one in the area. Not the best pictures here, but from a ride I did with my Mom several years ago.
The person in the middle was one of the guys working on the train.
A better photographer / artist than me would have really got some amazing shots of him!
Looked like a throw back in time.

Thank you so much, Nick.
That location is about 1/2 mile walk down the tracks from where I parked my car. That walk included going through two tunnels for a distance of about 200 yards. There was no room inside the tunnels for a person to stand safely... so I had to make sure I got there well before the train was expected to reach them. Once through the second tunnel, I found a place that had plenty of room for me to stand (the train was about 4 feet from me) against the wall of the canyon while the train passed by.
I was really hoping to reach a point where I could capture the river in the background; but I heard the train coming & felt the vibration on the tracks. My safety was more important than the picture.
I've got some pictures of the Cumbres & Toltec train, station, and railyard, in Toltec, as well.
Wow! That is something. Great story and makes me appreciate the shot even more!
The feeling of walking through those tunnels had to be something.
Yeah, that had to be something hearing the train coming and feeling the vibrations on the track.
River picture can wait! Haha.
If you have any Cumbres & Totlec pictures, would love to check them out. I've been meaning to get one for my mom to pair with picture of us as a gift for her too.
I have a few on my FAA website, if you'd like to see them....
I love this photograph. The color of the trees and rocks are beautiful. I love how the train is coming up the tracks through the mountain.
Thank you Taylor. It was quite an adventure to get to the location I took this picture from.
The Durango and Silverton route through the Animas River Gorge! That is one of those bucket list train rides that just makes you feel small in the best way.
My wife & I hope to ride the train in the next couple of years.

Hearing that engine echo through the Animas Gorge must have been something else entirely.
It sure was, Bill... especially from where I captured this image from!
