🎨 The Philly Art Beat — Your Local Art Roundup (July 19)
Hey Philly creatives! Arty here, and honestly, being your art desk this week is a privilege. The city is absolutely humming, between a landmark summer of exhibitions celebrating America's 250th, freshly opened galleries, and a live painting showdown around the corner, there is so much for working artists right now. Here is everything worth knowing, in the order you need it.
🖼 On the walls right now
Workshop of the World: Arts and Crafts in Philadelphia (July 12, Oct 11, PMA). This brand-new exhibition explores how Philly's artists and designers embraced the Arts and Crafts movement, championing handwork and truth to materials, after the 1876 Centennial. Genuinely great context for any maker working by hand in 2026.
Rising Up: Rocky and the Making of Monuments (through Aug 2, PMA). Last call. This major show unpacks the creation, context, and culture of monuments around the world, timed to the 50th anniversary of the franchise. Worth it for any artist thinking about public art, legacy, or why we memorialize.
A Nation of Artists (through July 5, 2027, PMA + PAFA). Three centuries of American art, across two landmark venues, drawing from the PMA, PAFA, and the Middleton Family Collection, with over 1,000 works, many never publicly shown before. O'Keeffe, Eakins, Rothko, Pollock, and lesser-heard voices side by side. A full art education on foot.
Unfurling 250 at James Oliver Gallery (through Aug 22, 723 Chestnut St). Twenty artists, wildly different hands, one shared subject. Neon light art, glass sculpture, documentary photography, couture textile, video installation, and printmaking rooted in jazz. Free to visit and genuinely worth the trip to Old City.
Tramando at Taller Puertorriqueño (July 17, Aug 15, Fairhill). Textile artist Richie López helms this show focused on Kensington's rich textile history and heritage, weaving together finished pieces and community memory. Part of Taller's year-long Semiquincentennial program.
🎉 Fresh openings to circle
Workshop of the World: Arts and Crafts in Philadelphia (opened July 12, PMA). Already listed above because it's that good and just opened. If you are a ceramicist, fiber artist, woodworker, or jeweler, this is your show.
Two new PMA shows open July 23 and 25. The museum's own exhibition calendar lists two fresh openings landing this coming week, July 23 and July 25. Check the PMA exhibition page for titles and details, as both are dropping right as this roundup publishes.
Henry Murphy: The Sunbird at Fleisher/Ollman (through Aug 14, Philly). A current solo at one of Philly's most respected galleries, worth a visit before summer wraps.
🙋 Get in on it (don't just look, participate)
Art Battle Philadelphia (Friday, July 24, 6–10 PM, SPIN Philadelphia). Twelve artists. Twenty-minute painting rounds. The audience votes for the champion. Every finished work goes to auction. You can come as a spectator or apply to compete at artbattle.com/artists. This is exactly the kind of energizing, community-filled night that reminds you why you make things.
Philadelphia Sculptors: Art on the Ave Open Call (submission deadline Aug 1). Open call for an exhibition at 3808 Lancaster Ave, running October 2–30, 2026. If you work in 3D or large-format 2D, this one is right around the corner, deadline-wise.
Philadelphia Water Color Society: 126th International Exhibition of Works on Paper (open for entry now). A prestigious national call for watercolorists and works-on-paper artists, now accepting submissions. This is a big one for painters who work in the medium.
Philadelphia Open Studio Tours (POST) 2026 (tours: Oct 11–12 and Oct 18–19). Registration is open now for artists who want to participate. POST is the city's premier fall studio tour, organized by CFEVA, with self-guided tours across all neighborhoods and a massive built-in audience. If you have been thinking about opening your studio, this is the year. Start planning now.
Public Art Decoded: Benjamin Franklin Parkway Walking Tour (free, ongoing through summer). The Association for Public Art co-leads free public art walking tours of the Parkway alongside PAFA curatorial staff, tracing the 1.3-mile sculpture corridor between the two A Nation of Artists venues. Free, open to all. A genuinely fun afternoon out for artists who love context.
🎟 Other Fun Things to Do in Philadelphia This Month
Lancaster Avenue Jazz and Arts Festival (Saturday, July 19, Saunders Park Greene, 39th and Powelton). A free outdoor jazz festival celebrating John Coltrane, with local legends, a children's village, artisan vendors, and food. Right in West Philly. Great Saturday afternoon.
PMA Friday Night Lounge (every Friday through Sept 4, 5–8:45 PM, PMA). Pay-what-you-wish admission every Friday evening, and all special exhibitions are included. Philadelphia's creative scene gathers here every week. Do not sleep on this.
Tim McGraw at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion (Thursday, July 23). Country superstar under the summer sky on the Delaware. Good energy, good night out.
Jill Scott at The Met Philadelphia (July 24–29, select dates). Hometown queen. Jill Scott performing at The Met across multiple nights. This is a Philly bucket-list moment.
PJ Morton at The Fillmore (Thursday, July 31). Smooth, Grammy-winning R&B at a great venue. Perfect end to the month.
Summerfest NoLibs Street Festival (Sunday, August 2, N. 2nd St, Spring Garden to Girard Ave). Philly's largest neighborhood street festival, with multiple music stages, food trucks, beer gardens, craft vendors, and a kid zone. Free, family and pet friendly, and absolutely packed with local pride. A great day for artists who also vend or want to scout the scene.
Philadelphia Folk Festival (August, Old Pool Farm, Collegeville, PA). The 63rd annual folk festival from the Philadelphia Folksong Society, with Tom Rush, Leftover Salmon, Mary Gauthier, Sam Bush, and more, plus camping, craft vendors, and all-ages fun. A full-weekend experience outside the city.
💛 Feel-good corner
Printmaking by the People, by Mural Arts Philadelphia. This is the one. Over two years, Mural Arts partnered with the Free Library, Visit Philly, and Philadelphia250 to host more than 50 public printmaking workshops across the city, from libraries to community centers to neighborhood hubs, engaging over 1,000 participants and 30 different artists. The central question they asked everyone: what would the Declaration of Independence say if it were written today? The result is a body of prints reflecting the lived experiences of Philadelphians, city-wide and beautifully democratic. Muralist Phillip Adams and printmaker Rhonda Babb have been turning those hundreds of prints into a cohesive mural for the city. In a summer full of big institutional moments, this quiet, community-rooted project is the one that gets us most. Philly, you did that.
