Supporting One Another & Getting the Most out of this Community

I've been away 2 weeks on vacation, but I have a question or maybe an exhortation for the community. I have gotten into the habit of making sure I go the the Artist's art gallery on Art Helper any time they comment on one of my posts, follow me, or post a painting I am drawn to. I spend some time going through their artwork and "liking" the ones that most capture my attention. At the beginning, several months ago, a few people did that for me too and I cannot tell you how much I appreciated that. So often we're not really sure if our work resonates with the public, or which paintings most resonate. Knowing this, often helps me learn and develop in both areas that are working, as well as reviewing work that isn't "liked," asking myself if there are ways that I can improve it. I am wondering if we all practiced this to a degree, we could learn from each other. I know it takes some time, but I know how valuable it is to me and wonder if others feel the same. I do want to point out that our galleries are now set up in categories, so it's important to go the the full gallery menu option or all you see are the 12 pieces or so that are the headings for categories. What are all of your thoughts on this?

I still don't understand what "connect" is as opposed to "follow", thanks!

I visited your profile @Linnie Aikens and I loved the red reading chair, very magical and it makes you want to be there

Thank you Ximena. I think "follow" is being notified if the other person posts something, if you like reading what they have to say or post. "Connect" is when you would like to message back and forth more privately.

You are a kind person. I believe you are on to something too. I see many paintings that resonate and I really enjoy. Sometimes i atop nd comment. Time becomes an issue but maybe if i could set aside one day for 20 minutes. I think you are right and if it helps lift someone up…perfect. Good suggestion

Thank you, Debra. So often we were solitary in our studios or plein-air in the landscape, and without interaction of others, much less other artists. It can cause doubt in both our abilities and our value in sharing our art. Art Helper for me provides an opportunity to interact and support others, and be supported, inspired, and encouraged by others in turn. It does take a little time, but I think you are right in saying 20 minutes most days are well worth it!!

Thank you for sharing this, Linnie. I completely agree. I found your gallery by exploring artists whose work inspired me, and I’m so glad I did. We all grow when we take the time to truly see each other’s work. I’m looking forward to learning from this wonderful community.

It means a lot to me to hear what other artists think about my art as well as their own. I'm not talking about critiques as much as gut feelings! I think hearing other artists put reactions to art into their own words stretches my understanding immensely. I can't spend a lot of time here, but the time I do spend is valuable.

@Linnie Aikens community support is key to artists becoming successful in their art career. I had posted about a documentary titled The Colour of Ink, in which a Canadian artist makes his own ink for his work and sends ink to other artists all over the world. Support comes in many forms. When you are talking about pastel chalk, paint (acrylic and oil), clay, wood, stone--not to mention all the extra tools. And those tools also need to be replaced at some point. The monetary cost is phenomenal. So, artists giving a leg up to other artists, is prudent to the survival of the entire community. I hate it when artists are so competitive that they would sabotage someone else's work to be #1. That's why I love this community. I have come across some amazing work here and have received nothing but support in return. My work is nowhere near what a lot of people here can do, which is why I plan to go back to college and get a B.A. in Studio Art. This page has made me want to improve my technique and expand on my mediums.

Linnie, this is such a thoughtful practice. I've noticed the same thing, when someone takes time to explore my podcast posts and engage with what really resonates for them, it completely shifts how I think about what I'm sharing. Your point about the gallery menu is so practical too, because I've definitely missed full collections by only seeing those category headers.

@ Courtney Langmore Thank you, Courtney! I appreciate your reminder about commenting on or engaging with podcasts too in support of the ASF staff who work so hard to provide these for us. For a while at the beginning I'd been commenting on such podcasts, videos, etc. presented by ASF staff, but never saw an acknowledgement or even "like" to let me know they saw my comment, so I began to think that staff never saw the comments to their work, and I stopped writing comments on those. What is the best way we can support you and April, Ben, Taylor, Indira, etc. so that you are getting the feedback you deserve too?

i agree, we all need to support each other and it feels so good. Starts your day off positive rather than viewing the news of the world!

Thank you for this message and a great attitude. I try to do my best with the little free time I can find to participate in the community.

Wonderful! I always love learning from old and new voices. I check back in spurts so that I can also focus on my painting, but when I do have time to connect, I find it so valuable—-uplifting and inspiring.

I liked the "your genome" service🙏 and I thank each of the 16 people who responded to my invitation to communicate😇

Thank you Iryna! It took me a minute to understand what you meant by genome service! haha! Sanctuary of Living Threads.....my double helix painting referring to not only the traits but the histories we pass down. It's a simple painting, but I think profound in meaning too. Thank you for seeing this!!

Hi @Linnie Aikens, I'm very new at this, and I still don't quite understand it, but since I uploaded my works here I've received a warm welcome and comments that seemed profound to me. It's good to give each other feedback through comments, and where I live this kind of community isn't very common. That's why I'm coming here from so far away! haha I have a lot to learn about appreciating other people's art, I love mutual collaboration!

Hi @Linnie Aikens I totally agree with you! A little bit day by day from my point of view is enough to keep up with the gang! By the way, you must be a very lovely person!!!

Linnie Aikens19h ago

Yes, I do a few at a time too. Some days there are a lot so I spread them out when I have time, but I do try to get to everyone. ....and thank you for the sweet words!

Hi Linnie, Thanks for this post. I try to do the same. I'm curious, how many communities do you post on regularly? Do you share a new painting in more than one community? I'm still not sure who actually sees what on this platform.

Thanks in advance,

Sue

I post a lot in painting but in a number of other communities as well depending on the theme/focus of my post. I’m one of those organized artists that file things where they “belong!” LOL 😂 which means, I have to visit a LOT of artists’ galleries, but it’s well worth it!! I learn so much and truly believe we need to support each other. 🥰

I am very new here but happy to see comments on my work and be in contact with other artist

Welcome! Once you post work on one of these communities, that allows others to comment on your work. From there, it's always nice to click on their name and go to their gallery to see if there is anything that draws you in from their gallery. I think, if we all did this, we'd support one another, even on the days when we're away and may have missed a post of a piece of art by you. I just clicked on your name and went to your gallery to check out your work. I love the blending of abstract and whimsey. Such delicate , fresh and fun work!
