"Pillow Talk" — Comments and/or Suggestions?

Post image 1

As I was walking up the steps to my home after an afternoon garden party, I paused at the top of the steps and looked back over my shoulder.  The colorful pillows seemed to whisper and giggle the joy of good friends long after they’d left the “room”.  The feeling is what inspired this painting.

“Pillow Talk” looks like the perfect backyard gathering spot—soft cushions, a glowing fire pit, dappled sunlight through the trees, with a view of the ocean on the horizon.  It’s the kind of place people imagine for laughter and wine and easy conversation.  But for me, this scene is also about the quieter talks that happen when the guests leave: the confessions whispered in the low light, the truths you only say when you feel safe enough.  This piece holds space for both: the joy of connection and the honest, vulnerable words that only come out when you’re finally off-stage.

Part of my Rooms with a View series, this piece continues my interest in creating spaces that hold both calm and intensity, peacefulness and energy, invitation and mystery. It’s a room meant not just to be seen, but felt.

Hi. I’m tried to reply to your own comment but was unable to.

I love this ! But I don’t know that those trees clash because the ones on the right seem to fade into what’s behind them. See the black and white version of your painting.

Thank you, Karin. I see that now. I have used the strategy of looking at a painting in black and white before to check the value balance, but just forgot on this one, and it is very clear I need to dull-out the similar eucalyptus trees behind the front one. It's so weird how you can stare at a painting for hours, days, months and know something is bothering you and not see it. I so appreciate you reminding me of this value-checking strategy. THANK YOU!!

You’re welcome! When we are creating we are so into the process and are physically so close to the piece that it’s sometimes hard to literally step back. When I’m struggling with a piece I find the B/W analysis to be extremely helpful.

It is a great story- I love relaxing spots like that! I don’t know if you need to change the pots in the front. Walk away from the painting for a few days and come back to it and then see! It’s beautiful.

Thank you Suz. I did correct the values of the background trees and the sofa arm closest to the front, and in real life lighting the painting feels really good now. I appreciate all of your comments. This community really helps me when I feel stuck after working on a painting too long!

I enjoy the story you have shared. It’s a lovely work. You have strengthened the image by reserving the rich reds for the main subject. By adding finer detail to the pillows would draw the eye to the central part of your story (pillows).

As you consider the black and white values (nice comment) creating less detail with darker values in the surrounding landscape, will help balance the bright to dark; fine detail to impression.

Again, beautiful piece!

You are brave to put your work in front of a critical audience. It shows how you are committed to being the best artist you can be. Keep up the inquiry and tenacity to explore new approaches.

I'm wondering if I need to go darker greens on the potted trees in the front. In reality they were that light and bright, but now I feel they clash in this painting. ???

Thank you, Sascia! It's an old piece that just never seemed right. I revamped quite a bit of it, and am much happier with it because it conveys more of what I was feeling at the time of inspiration to paint it!

I think you should also create some cropped pies of various parts of this painting too! There are such fun things going on here!
