The light spaces in a painting aren't waiting to be rescued. They're already doing something. And the fact that you could feel yourself reaching for them out of need rather than intention, and then step back, tells me you're listening to the work more closely than you think.

Letting a piece rest is not the same as walking away from it. It's letting the conversation between you and the painting breathe. Sometimes the most generous thing you can do for something you're making is give it room.
