a commission that took some thinking and planning to get "right" for the client

Post image 1

Finished! A small (8"x10") commissioned oil painting of Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park. I did this for a new client who is making a special gift of it to a friend who shared this sunrise. I used two of the buyer's photos and one of my own then worked out my composition as a charcoal sketch -- no one photo showed what the client wanted in the painting, so careful planning was involved!

I haven't used pastels in 30 years when I had absolutely no clue about their function and composition structure.Your work is always captivating. It inspires me to put some time on my schedule to experiment...

Thanks Suzanne-- this is an oil, but I love working in pastels and feel more at home with them. I feel like I'm painting when using oils, but speaking when using pastels, they're so immediate, like color flowing out of my fingertips.

A painting of a sunrise two friends shared together, given as a gift. The painting is really about the friendship.

That's a lovely thought Bill! I am always honored when someone choses to gift my art, but being asked to paint a shared moment was special.

This is one of the more unusual of your landscapes...no vast dramatic sky, more dark and foreboding, a mysterious landscape that raises good questions. I like it!

Thanks Sharyn-- the photos she gave me were dark and atrocious, but one had a soft pink glow in the sky, one had the cliffs at high noon, and one had the dark water. I'd been there, so I knew what would happen at dawn. I didn't intentionally paint in mystery, but I think being forced to use more imagination than usual created that sense of the mysterious beyond the seen.

What did you use like medium

This is an oil on an Ampersand Gessobord. 8x10 inches. I use Neo-Meglip or however you spell that as a drying, thinning and glazing medium.
