The Instagram Conundrum

I'm not sure that 'conundrum' is the right word, but I am puzzled by Instagram. About a week ago, I had 1969 followers, not a massive number, but a decent number nevertheless. Every day, I get notifications that new people are following me. Often these numbers are in the low 30's, but one day it was 75. Honestly, I don't get excited because, as I said in my previous post, I believe that followers are worthless.

This morning, out of curiosity, I checked how many followers I have now. 1969, which is the same number I had a week ago before all the new followers. That number has also remained the same every day since I first checked. Mathematically speaking, the odds of this happening are astronomical; in fact, I asked Claude, and it said the odds of net-zero growth for my account size are ~2–5%.

On that basis, and that basis alone, Instagram is not to be trusted. Am I wrong, and if so, why?

Watching the number stay exactly the same while notifications keep telling you people are arriving. That's a strange kind of quiet, isn't it? Like filling a room and finding it just as empty when you turn around.

There's something exhausting about measuring the reach of your work in a place that seems to erase the evidence as fast as it appears. The puzzlement you're feeling makes sense. You put the work out, you see the little confirmations roll in, and then the scoreboard shrugs like nothing happened.

Your work still landed somewhere. Someone stopped scrolling, looked, and chose to follow. The fact that a counter can't hold onto that doesn't undo the moment when your piece caught someone's eye. The numbers may be slippery, but the work you made to earn those pauses was real, and it still is.

I'm not sure what real value there is in Instagram followers. Instagram, in my opinion, isn't there for art buyers. It's there for scrollers with very short attention spans, like TikTok. Probably not my prospective buyers. I would be interested to know how many sales people have made due to an Instagram presence, and ONLY due to an Instagram presence.

Hey! The puzzle actually has a pretty clean explanation, and your instinct about followers is doing you a favor here.

What's happening is two things at once: real (and not-so-real) accounts follow you every day, AND Instagram quietly removes accounts on the back end. Bots, spam profiles, accounts that get flagged or deactivated. Instagram runs continuous purges, and active accounts with decent followings tend to attract more of these throwaway follows. So you're on a treadmill: 30 new in, 30 swept out, net zero.

The part you already nailed: follower count is a vanity number. The metrics that actually correlate with sales are profile visits that turn into website clicks, DM conversations with real people, and saves on your posts (saves signal "I want to come back to this"). A profile with 1,969 followers and a 5% save rate is outperforming one with 20,000 followers and a 0.3% save rate every single day.

If you want to test whether your real audience is growing, check Instagram Insights weekly and track two numbers: website taps and saves. If those trend up even slightly over a month, the growth that matters is happening regardless of what the follower counter says.

Mystery solved, almost. I restarted my phone, and the number of followers updated to where I thought it should be. However, I say the mystery has almost been solved, and the reason I said that is that the number had been updating without restarting the app or the phone.

That's been true for me too for the past year Michael. You gain, you lose. Some of it's due to Instagram removing bots, etc. Others are winnowing themselves away as I go deeper into my niche. I'm not concerned re: followers. I'm more interested in watching engagement and doing what I can to 1:1 connect with individuals whether through DMs or replies. I have tons of fake accounts follow me (e.g. PierceBrosnanXXXXX - pick a number) and I just ignore them. As it is, I'm finding Instagram becoming less relevant over time.
