NEW: Reputation Points Are Now Redeemable for Rewards!

Hey all – big news today with the launch of reputation point rewards!

Reputation Points are our way of tangibly rewarding you for making ArtHelper an artist community that's worth visiting every day.

You earn them for creating great discussion posts, sharing your work, leaving comments, giving artists critiques, and inviting others to join in.

And now, you can redeem them for real rewards:

  • Paid subscriptions: Human-Made Art, Instagram Growth, and ArtHelper Pro

  • Studio-grade artist services: a bespoke portfolio PDF, Instagram and Facebook Glow-Ups, even 1-hour art business consultations

  • Cash payouts: coming soon!

Looking at other online artist communities, they all seem to struggle with the same few issues. Off-topic noise, engagement bait, trolling, algorithms designed to distract and upset you...😵‍💫

These are all side effects of the fact that platforms like Reddit and Facebook simply weren't designed with artists in mind. And you can feel it.

On ArtHelper, we're ALL-IN on making the dream platform for creatives. In fact, most of our features this year have come directly from your suggestions!

ArtHelper belongs to all of us, and now you can financially benefit just from participating. 💪

We'd love your feedback on this update! Keep in mind this is a soft launch. Expect a few rough edges. If something looks off or breaks, tell us in the comments and we'll fix it fast.

Enjoy!

Taylor

P.S. - Have your eye on a higher cost reward? Here's a reminder on how to earn Points:

  • +2 points when someone likes your post

  • +1 when someone likes your comment

  • +3 when someone comments on your post

  • +20 when your critique on a critique request gets an upvote

  • +50 when the artist marks your critique as "valued"

  • +500 when a friend joins from your invite

I’m not totally convinced the point system is a good thing. While I commend the thought behind it, it’s also apparent that people are taking advantage of the weaknesses in the way it tabulates. We have a number of people who are posting singles images multiple times a day and getting points not just for each post, but for each like. Tell me this isn’t fishing for points? Likewise are the people who post the same image in multiple communities or post the same image with different titles. They get points for each. How does one get 500, 700, 1000 points in a day and not be gaming the system. This is incentivizing the wrong be behaviors.

If you want to incentivize engagement, limit the points for an image to one post no matter how many communities it’s posted in; don’t give points to the same image posted with different titles; don’t give points for single word responses or responses that are cut and pasted to multiple posts; don't give points to AI generated responses.

While I’m at it, I think the site could be a little more discriminating as to who it lets in. I welcome inclusivity, but note pad doodles, memes, and paintings of cartoon characters? Really?

I’m sorry to be so negative, but as well intentioned as this may be, it’s seems to be appealing more to people’s basest instincts for greed and attention and less to substantive discussion and critique.

Hey Ted - thanks for the feedback and all to be considered. The suggestion box is open. We would want to see the accounts doing what you are mentioning, and that makes me think we need another way for you to report these to us when you see them.

One thing that also needs more usage and awareness is the downvote. The downvote removes points.

Hello Ted I agree I have seen the same image from the same artist numerous times & I get the message that this artist has posted new work. It can be frustrating & time consuming.

4

I agree with most of your sentiments. The multiple posts of the same image is ridiculous.

I agree with Ted's comments. With one caveat. I am still relatively new here and therefore still learning how to share, upload, etc. I did not realize, that when I do an AI prompt from this site, via the emails we get, that it reposts an item I already shared, making multiple posts. I thought when we follow these prompts that it was simply for our own view to help us improve as an artist. It would not let me reuse a post that was already uploaded. So, I would have to reselect from my collection and "browse" then choose the image. I had not realized that it was reposting the same image. So, perhaps a little grace could be given for those posts. It is possible that other newbies like myself, are not intentionally reposting the same image multiple times. I do apologize to all, for any multiple posts from myself. As it was not done for point chasing. It is possible that this is why we see so many duplicate posts. With that said, others do indeed post repeats. Perhaps, instead of doing a point system that encourages point chasing, you could do badges for activity, or participation on the platform. Instead of points, badges will still let others know you are actively engaging, and if necessary, this will also give the feeling of being seen and heard, for those who want that kind of encouragement. Just give the option to opt out of the notices. As we do get a lot of email notifications already, so having the option to opt out, could be helpful for overflowing inboxes. The badges could be added after a certain number of interactions and that would eliminate point chasing. This platform is a safe artist community, that is meant to help us be encouraged, inspired and connect with other artists and possibly finding our niche or people if you will. It is not meant to become a platform for unhelpful posts or hurtful commentary, etc. I love the feedback of constructive, well meaning, inspiring, guidance to improve our art and skills. Not just pandering for compliments. Or seek attention. But, for true honest feedback on how to do better and create more developed works. I am very glad to have found this community, and hope to continue to grow as an artist.

This sounds like a great type of rewarding and motivating plan, and I'm all for it! Lets make this happen everyone, I will do my part in this because I believe in building people up when it comes to their art. I never had anyone to do that for me in my younger years, if I did I know I would've come much further than I have. Arthelper, you have my full support.

4

I think this is fantastic! This platform helps me to follow and support my next steps towards success as and creative artist. Arthelper thank you 🥰

4

I all the insights on my work is right on point I don't see a dark in my work I just put what I feel in that moment. You never can tell what I might do next. We shall see.

4

I think that's awesome way to appreciate all the artists here not just a few you get what you put in

3

I really get a nice ego boost from seeing my points go up with each posting I share of my Art Work, But I honestly do not want to see them got down, by cashing in on them. I should also point out, That I have been getting Nintendo points from playing Games on Nintendo Switch for 4 years & have never spent them on anything.

2

Love this but didn't like losing all what I thought were my points.

Sounds great! Started my art journey 2 years ago from painting free online references. I’ve been trying to do some originals since last year. I want to know where I’m at at the moment as an artist and hopefully get to sell some of my paintings❤

I think this communication was wonderful to get others communicating about art and issues with the art. To have a "reward" is an added plus for us . But it should be monitored for abuse as well. I like Tefd Smith's comments as well.

Hi, Taylor. I've been studying for a while what can be done with the points, and I wonder which option would be most effective. Since March, roughly, I've had a steady growth in followers; in the last two months, about 600 per month on average. Now I have around 3,260 in total.

That's why I'm not sure whether the Instagram Glow Up program would help me.

On Facebook, as it was performing so poorly (120), I've gone back to using my personal page as my main page. There I have a similar figure, around 2,500 followers or so. Still, I'm not getting sales, neither on Facebook nor Instagram.

What do you recommend? Which of the programs would be the most useful?

Ted, thank you for your reply. I will definitely check my settings, as this could be the source of the posting issues. Appreciate you suggesting this. Let me clarify about the badges. I only meant that if the badge was showing on their profile, it would let other artists know that they are still actively engaging in the community, which allows other artists to know that they are a resource for feedback, critiques, or encouragement. Not so much for a status "symbol", but so individuals that would like their feedback on their art, could ask them for feedback. A true sharing of honest thoughts and impressions from other artists. I do agree that I too have seen similar commentaries that are rather over the top. I too wondered if the individuals used AI to write for them, so they could sound "overly educated", using language that as you stated, "people rarely speak like that". Glad to know I am in good company on that thought. Would not be surprised if there are fake or "bot" accounts. AI seems to be infiltrating all aspects of online platforms, communities and our daily lives at this point. Unfortunately, a tool meant to benefit, also has the ability to assist bad actors as well. Just as any other technology has. When I say a safe artist community, I mean a place where we can feel comfortable with sharing our art in the hopes of receiving honest feedback and suggestions, which has been my experience. Especially when individuals that are here, are truly here for that reason. We know that there are those who are only here for ego stroking or affirmation of their skills and don't truly want honest feedback, just point fishing. Overall though I feel that those individuals do not overwhelm the majority of us who are here for legitimate reasons. That may be a naive view on my part, but it is what I have seen. I have enjoyed everyone's comments and this open discussion. This is exactly what this platform should be like. Everyone sharing their views and being ok with not fully agreeing, in a respectful manner. It's OK to disagree and still have a discussion. Thank you for your comments and thoughts on all this. It is appreciated.

Hahaha. "Overly educated"... is that a euphemism for pretentious?

Thanks for clarifying some of your previous ideas, that makes a lot of sense and I agree. That is not to say others may agree with us, but... well, you know.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. This is really what I come here for.

Sounds awesome 🙌🏻

This sounds great, I started this process with no self confidence in my art. Reviews, tips and support from my peers and the ai has given me the confidence to move forward with my vision and to stop being overly self critical. A big thank you to the app and the artists that use it

Thank you for sharing your view :)

Just wanted to say, this is the level of discussion that I would welcome to see more of. When I post a comment, I'm not doing so to be sycophantic nor malicious. I like to think that my comments have some validity, but if you disagree I'd rather hear from you than be ghosted, or worse, dismissed. I am open to discussion to why someone does what they do and defend their approach. I helps me to understand and validates your position as well.

Right now the user Biobit is flooding this place with images, can not even count them. Is he contributing, egaging, commenting at the same rate? Of course not. His reputation is high(?) with 1639 points. Get my point? 🤔

0
Ted Smith11h ago

He is far from. the only one, but I won't mention names.

0
Nick Friend10h ago

have you guys reported him? you can do that by going to his profile and clicking "report user".

Also for duplicate posts, you can report the post. This will flag our system for human review of that post and that user.

0
Ted Smith9h ago

I will point out that you can also block someone by clicking on their name and then going to the dots to the right and clicking on Block Member. That way you don't see their posts and comments.

I'll add to this that I looked at the guy's website where he posts a whole lot of shit from art to songs to recipes to philosophical musings. He all but admits it's all AI generated.

Can we use the points towards the cost off the Human Badge? To limit the duplicate posting"playing the system" maybe you could limit the amount of time blocks that can be earned

Fab really looking forward to this

Anything to encourage or even demand people to comment. "..in this community we both give and recieve...", sort of. 🤔 Send out reminders thru ai with that requirement as a complement to all the technical, numbers and marketing stuff. To earn just by a few clicks is not enough imo. A lot of people are asking for feedback and so on. But they are not provinding any themselves. 🤫 That is the main issue imo and have been so for at least 25-30 years. A sincere short comment, funny or helpful or whatever is worth much more both in the short or long run, than a number, flag or heart. Creative wishes, Hans 😊

I rather disagree. I would say most of the people on this quorum are not professionals and aren’t looking for feedback so much as affirmation. Forums such as this generally stress decorum more than honesty and the stereotypical uber-sensitive “artists”, as far as I have witnessed, are more interested in having their egos stroked and fishing for points than in thought discussion or critique.

0

I rather disagree 😉 This have noting to do with professional or not. And some are openly and direct asking for feeback and critique. I do believe some people actually want more than praise. But are they willing to give? 😟

1
Ted Smith11h ago

I have given praise where I think it is deserved. I only comment on things for which I feel I have not only experience but which attract my attention for one reason or another. I may (and have) commented on landscapes because that is my thing and I feel I have experience and knowledge that makes my comments valid. But I am not about to comment on a photo of a paper clip, for instance, because I feel it is one: fishing for points, and two: is not valid as art.

Just the same, if people are looking for feedback, they should be open to criticism as well as praise. I am never openly critical or malicious and I like to think my comments are valid and of service, or at least open to discussion. One doesn't have to agree with me, but being dismissive of anything less than praise serves no one.

0

Yeah I had 2k taken off me just as this was launched?

0

Yes, unfortunately the algorithm kept placing points in our profiles. I notified the company about this exact issue. We didn’t earn those points and that is why they were taken back. Many people are angry and confused about this. My issue is it should not have happened in first place and when it was discovered a text to each person explaining the issue may have landed a little easier. Understanding this, it’s a great community here and the site does have a lot to offer. 🙋🏻‍♂️

Ted Smith23h ago

I agree Richard, that this could have been handled better, but I think it has also exposed the disingenuous nature of people’s purpose for being here in the first place.

0
Ted Smith23h ago

Well this begs the question then, what is the point and purpose of the site: a forum for discussion and feedback or dick measuring by point totals?

I hate to be crude about it, but some of the responses to this mistake are rather childish if you ask me.
