Master pastelist Albert Handell told a much younger version of me that the background should be as important as the subject. For this 9x12 soft pastel "Garden Heartbeats" I used a light, impressionistic gouache underpainting in the background areas, then applied pastels selectively over that. I'm not such a purist to any medium that I won't use whatever works, and I like the mottled complexity combining mediums gave me here. First time for everything--but I'll do this technique again on florals. Thoughts on backgrounds for botanical art???

What kind of flowers are they? They look like crystal pansies, but I could be wrong.

Always nice to have a story to go along with the beautiful florals.

"The background should be as interesting as the subject." That is a very interesting lesson! I'll be pondering that one.

The same day he offered that wisdom, he also told me I really needed to work on my overdone skies and stop making them so complicated. I was confident enough of myself as a painter that I listened to the advice about backgrounds and chucked the critique of my skies, for which I've won major awards LOL
