Henri Cartier-Bresson born — 1908

On August 22, 1908, Henri Cartier-Bresson was born in Chanteloup-en-Brie, France. He would become one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century, pioneering a documentary style that valued spontaneity and composition in equal measure.

Cartier-Bresson trained as a painter before turning to photography in the early 1930s. Armed with a small Leica camera, he developed what he called the decisive moment, capturing fleeting instants of human experience with geometric precision. His work spanned war reportage, street photography, and portraiture. In 1947, he co-founded Magnum Photos, the cooperative agency that reshaped photojournalism and gave photographers control over their own archives.

His belief that photography could reveal deeper truths about everyday life remains a guiding principle for documentary photographers, street artists, and anyone working with the camera as a tool for observation rather than manipulation.
