Portrait of a Moose

Post image 1

I'd love to get some feedback on this image of a moose grazing in a stand of trees...hence the shadow and very close-in focus on the head. Like, don't like, what would you/should I do differently in terms of processing? Do you know anyone who would put it in their space...I'm not asking for referrals....just wondering if it is marketable.

I'm really liking the mood here, the emotion, the intensity, and the contrast all come through nicely 🙂

The dramatic lighting is doing a lot of heavy lifting here and I mean that as a compliment. That close crop against the dark background gives it a studio portrait feel which is unusual for wildlife — and that's what makes it marketable. People who collect nature photography want something that feels elevated, not like a snapshot from a hike. This has that.

There is something so captivating about how this portrait brings the moose’s quiet strength to life. I love how it feels like a moment stolen from the wild, full of calm and presence. It really makes me appreciate the beauty and mystery of these amazing creatures!

This is absolutely marketable — the dramatic lighting and close crop give it a studio portrait quality that wildlife photos rarely have. It would sit really well in a modern living room or office that leans into natural textures. The moose-as-subject is also still niche enough to feel fresh.

Capturing such an intimate moment with that moose so close really speaks to your patience and connection with nature! It’s wonderful to see how you bring these quiet wildlife encounters into our world.

You were asking for some feedback. I would have liked if you had posted the unedited version too. It would have been interesting to understand how you came to the decision to portray this moose like this. It is effective since it has a lot of contrast. The moose have something in his mouth, it looks like a metal thing, but I can't figure it out. I think the photo is great. How could you get such a close up shot of a moose?

I think this is super cool. The subject is a little dark for me against the black background, which makes it a little harder to see. That's my only critique. This feels very editorial to me. I feel like nature enthusiasts who want something that feels really clean and chic would go for this 100 percent.
