Description
There is something about Shad Thames that always draws my attention back to its extraordinary architecture. In this black-and-white photograph, I wanted the historic brick warehouses, cobbled street and distinctive overhead iron bridges to become the story. The repeating bridges create natural frames through the street, while the cobbles and warehouse façades pull the eye towards the distance. Removing the colour helped me emphasise the textures, shadows, geometry and industrial character of this fascinating part of Southwark. For me, this is one of those London streets where the city's history still feels very much present.
