Description
The extraordinary decoration on Gloriana is worth seeing close up. Here I concentrated on the Royal Arms, surrounded by the sweeping gold ornament and deep red panels of The Queen’s Rowbarge. There’s an enormous amount of detail, from the crowned lion and unicorn to the motto Dieu et mon droit beneath the shield. Gloriana was built for Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and later led the man-powered vessels in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. She was intended as a lasting legacy of the Jubilee and a showcase for traditional British boatbuilding. Gloriana, The Queen's Rowbarge One of the things I like about this view is the contrast. Behind all that elaborate royal decoration are the modern yachts and buildings of St Katharine Docks, bringing together two very different sides of London’s relationship with the water.
