Description
London's Grade II-listed telecommunications landmark, built between 1961 and 1965 as the capital's hub for Britain's microwave communications network. The closer you get to the BT Tower, the more interesting its structure becomes. From this upward viewpoint, it's the different circular levels that catch my eye — particularly the glazed sections, exposed telecommunications equipment and the bright blue information band. The broken cloud behind it also helps separate all those complicated details at the top of the tower. Built between 1961 and 1965, the tower was created as London's hub for Britain's developing microwave telecommunications network. Its circular form wasn't simply an architectural choice: it helped provide 360-degree transmission while reducing wind resistance. The building has been Grade II listed since 2003. Historic England It's such a familiar part of London's skyline that it's easy to overlook just how unusual the architecture is when viewed close up.
