Where the Wind Once Worked

Stone, wood and sky. These old windmills still stand along the landscape, carrying the memory of a time when the wind was part of everyday life. Silent now, but still telling their story.

I love that thought, Iris. Perhaps that is what makes these places so compelling — they no longer need to serve their original purpose to belong to the landscape. They simply remain, carrying time with them.
That’s a fascinating way of looking at it — memory living in what is no longer there rather than in what remains. I had never thought of these old structures quite that way, but it fits them beautifully. Sometimes absence really does tell more than the object itself.
Exactly, Iris. I think that sense of belonging is what made me stop. They may no longer work with the wind, but somehow they still belong to the landscape.
Thank you, Iris. I love that thought — “holding time and memory.” Perhaps that is exactly what drew me to them. They no longer work with the wind, but somehow they still belong to it. And I really like your idea of their quietness being earned rather than empty.
Thank you, Suki. I really love the way you describe the wind as a character in the landscape. These old windmills made me think precisely about what remains when something that once shaped everyday life is no longer visible — only its traces are. Your idea of space carrying memory really stayed with me.
