First Light at Ribeira

The first light of morning reaches Ribeira d’Ilhas quietly.
At low tide, the rocky shore emerges while long, gentle lines travel towards the coast. Above, the last traces of morning mist soften the meeting between Atlantic and sky.

Thank you, Nora. I really like the way you described the balance between atmosphere and structure. The mist was completely natural — one of those early mornings when the Atlantic seems to dissolve into the sky. I didn’t want to interfere with it too much; I simply tried to frame what was already happening. I’m especially glad you noticed the rocks anchoring the foreground, because that contrast with the softness of the horizon was exactly what caught my eye.

Thank you, Devon. Atmospheric perspective is one of the things I love most about photographing this coast, because the conditions can change so quickly. The mist here was entirely natural, and I was fascinated by that gradual transition where it became difficult to tell exactly where the sea ended and the sky began. The exposed rocks at low tide gave me the foreground structure I needed, so I could let the rest of the image remain soft. I’m really pleased that the tonal separation still works at thumbnail size — thank you for noticing that.
