My work often revisits pieces I’ve made previously in an effort to push how far I can take something. The question I find myself edging up against is whether or not a piece can, like life itself, hold endless possibilities within it, and if so, is each one a chapter, or a whole artwork unto itself? To me, each of these says something different and holds weight on their own. But I think shown together these pieces can be confusing for people, even though for me they’re part of the whole. Such is this potential disconnect between artist and viewer that can sometimes be tossed aside in an effort to appease the viewer— at the cost of the artist’s own inquiries— which are obviously such an integral part of the art itself. And round and round we go. Commentary welcome 🙏 Original is a machine stitched collage of cut up gauche painted watercolor papers, using a randomized action of letting each piece fall to the paper before allowing the sewing machine to work its way around w minimal guidance to pin the papers down. I did turn some papers over when they landed w bare side upright since I was not interested in the colors white or black at the time I made this

Love that you're asking the question instead of waiting for someone to answer it for you. Is each version a chapter or its own artwork? My take — it doesn't matter what you call it. What matters is that you're following your own curiosity and not trying to make the "market-friendly" version. The artists who do interesting work are the ones who can't stop pulling on the thread (no pun intended). The audience will catch up. They always do. Keep iterating. Keep posting the process. That's the content most artists are too afraid to share, and it's the stuff that actually connects.
