Golden Leisure 2025 | Mixed media and acrylic on textured canvas | 80 × 80 cm Golden Leisure is my contemporary interpretation of a scene inspired by the atmosphere of La Piscine (1969), a film celebrated for its Mediterranean setting, summer light, elegance, and emotional tension. I was drawn to the contrast within the scene: the beauty and freedom of a summer afternoon alongside the quiet distance between the two figures. The turquoise pool, warm sunlight, and golden palms create an atmosphere of luxury and escape, while the relationship between the figures leaves space for the viewer to imagine what lies beneath the surface. For this work, I built the textured canvas by hand using layered toilet paper as a sculptural material. I shape and build the surface before applying acrylic paint, transforming this ordinary everyday material into a tactile foundation for the painting. The resulting relief catches and reflects light, giving the work a changing quality depending on the viewer’s position and the surrounding light. The geometric planes are an important part of my visual language. I use them to fragment the scene into pieces of color, light, and memory. Rather than reproducing the film still literally, I wanted to transform the cinematic image into something that feels like a remembered moment—fragmented, atmospheric, and personal. Golden Leisure is ultimately about beauty, memory, intimacy, and the emotions that exist beneath seemingly perfect moments. It invites the viewer to step into the scene and create their own story.
