After the Last Light 2025 Mixed media and acrylic on textured canvas 50 × 60 cm Custom black-and-gold floater frame Artist’s Statement After the Last Light captures an intimate moment of solitude inside a softly illuminated hotel room. A woman sits quietly on a sofa, wrapped in an oversized white shirt, holding a cigarette as she becomes absorbed in her own thoughts. The warm glow of the lamp creates a sense of intimacy, while the surrounding shadows leave much of the story untold. Inspired by the atmosphere of classic European cinema, the painting explores solitude, reflection, mystery, and the moments that exist between one chapter of life and the next. The cigarette is not the focus of the work, but becomes a small detail within a larger atmosphere of stillness and contemplation. As with my other paintings, I build the surface by hand using layered toilet paper as a sculptural material, shaping the relief before applying acrylic paint. Transforming an everyday material into a tactile artistic surface is an important part of my practice. The raised texture catches the light and creates subtle changes in the painting depending on the viewer’s position. The geometric forms fragment the room, the figure, and the light, transforming the scene into something between reality and memory. I am interested in how a single moment can hold an entire story without revealing exactly what happened before or what will happen next. After the Last Light invites the viewer into that silence and leaves the story open to interpretation. For me, it is a painting about the beauty of solitude, the complexity of inner life, and the quiet moments in which we are alone with our thoughts.
