Description
Emergence'-
'Emergence '(120 x 120 cm) is a mixed media work by Queensland artist Jeremy McNamara that investigates renewal, memory and the psychological imprint of landscape. Constructed over a pre-existing canvas, the work incorporates remnants of another artist’s impasto surface and embedded fabric, reworked through layers of acrylic and charcoal. Rather than obscuring its history, the painting ‘phoenixes’ from it—allowing earlier gestures to persist as both structure and residue.
Informed by the artist’s relocation to sub-tropical Far North Queensland, 'Emergence' draws on close observation of dense, regenerative environments where growth is layered, unruly and continuous. The surface echoes the complexity of tropical understory—where light fractures, forms overlap, and visibility is partial. Marks are interrupted, revisited and reasserted, reflecting both ecological systems and internal states.
The work considers landscape not as a fixed image, but as an immersive and psychological experience. It speaks to the way place is absorbed, processed and re-expressed—where memory, sensation and environment converge in a field of ongoing transformation.
