Abandoned along the rough road to the dramatic and remote Toroweap Overlook on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, this weathered piece of equipment lingers, a relic from another age. Once drawn by horses or mules to shape and smooth the earth, it helped forge a still-unpaved route. Now silent and worn by time, it stands as a ghost of the era when the road was made.
This old Adams Leaning Wheel Grader stands as a reminder of the era before motorized roadwork. The long blade underneath would scrape and redistribute soil, while the complex system of gears, wheels, and levers allowed the operator to adjust the blade’s angle and height.
Now silent and weathered, it feels like a ghost from the age when the road itself was still being made.
