Description
Black bears regularly prowl the streets in my neighborhood and often come through the yard. Mostly they are courteous. As long as I lock the garbage bin and leave a gap in the fence they mostly do no damage. They poke around, moving without haste no matter how many dogs are barking at them. The consummate polite and unassuming guest, their presence let's me feel the pleasure of being connected to the larger natural community that surrounds us. I feel my responsibility to them, these icons of healthy ecosystems. Their strength, wisdom and playfulness speak loudly to me.
