Where The Heavens Meet the Waters

Colors have a strong significance in different cultures. They give off an emotion, a force that underlies a deeper meaning. In the bible , they are symbolic of divine truths and hierarchical order of creation. Blue represents the heavens and the divine order of things. Think of the waters that have a serenity and peace but can show life and death. Purple was royalty, power and wealth in the ancient world. Red was atonement, blood, sacrifice and vitality. Gold was glory and reflected the enduring nature of God. it doesn't tarnish or rust. In this pastel drawing I blended the waters and the heavens to bring both forces together.

Lovely! I am so glad you included the description! By itself, the pastel painting is just beautiful, but knowing the story weaves a much richer depth and meaning to the viewing. It imbues the fluidity of a divine transcendence with temporal interaction.

hello group.. I will tell you that aim not a trained artist..so I do not know all the fancy vernacular and terms.. in fact, probably the main reason I picked it up was out of boredom somehow.. but now I am in love with creating.. and so be it. but also I like the groups attitude so far.. yes let's stir some things up..very good. that sounds right up my ally..have a good day, Steve

Hey Steven, I am with you in the same situation, I have training as a textile designer from the Fashion Inst. in NYC and from my very early years in fine art from classes but I am in a group known as "the outsiders." We are people who don't have the formal training and that is just fine! I have a number of friends who are in the same group and are excellent artists. You work your craft like anyone else with consistency, hard work and never stop learning. The more you do it, the better you get at it. I came back to my fine art at 51 and how I am 69! I understand my craft and know what I am doing from studying other artists, taking things from them and adding it to my own style and developed my own look. Inspiration is very important but it also comes with studying your craft and developing it, so the inspiration has the human tools to work with. You are the medium that it works through but you have to be familiar and learn to master the medium that you are working with! Have fun with the journey, you will only keep getting better! Best, Len
