Captured in 2020 using only natural light, the image isolates a broken roof tile emerging from absolute darkness. The object itself is ordinary, damaged, and disregarded — yet when light touches its surface, it becomes monumental. Texture, edge, and shadow construct the image more than the subject ever could.
Inspired by Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro, this work embraces contrast as a structural element rather than a stylistic choice. Darkness is not absence here; it is the foundation that allows form to exist. The light does not describe the object — it creates it.
The photograph asks a quiet question:
If light defines what we see, does the object itself matter at all?
