Individual - Interactions series
Oil on canvas with a monoclinic gypsum trapeze and green calcite one, a citrus mineral, amber, one chalcedony and two aqua aura quartzes.
Discovering the Self and the Other is an oil painting that aims to emphasise the interdependence of the knowledge we have of ourselves and others. The colour divides the canvas into two planes, although the contrast is slight. One plane is dominated by a light blue, representing the sky, while the other is dominated by a turquoise blue, with more undulating shapes that remind us of the sea. The 'I' is represented in the foreground by an indistinct figure based on Rodin's 'Thinker'.
In his reflection, the Thinker sees his reflection, which is nothing more than a construction emerging from the water. The point is that the knowledge I have of the other also depends on my knowledge of myself. The clearer our knowledge of ourselves, the better the construction we have of others.
The function of the stones is essentially twofold: 1. it marks the division of the levels and their complementarity. Separation through the positioning of the gypsum and the green calcite. Complementarity because one of the uses of gypsum is to make glass (several mines were opened for this purpose during the Roman Empire), which allows the eye to pass from one plane to the other, albeit imperfectly. It is also used as a building material. Green calcite is transparent, so you can see through it, and it is also used to make cement.
2. The citrus mineral, the amber, the chalcedony and the two aqua aura quartzes, which by their arrangement emphasise the 5 senses and by their transparency represent the ability to see, taste, smell, hea
