The best portfolio pieces I ever made started as total wrecks in the first pass. Ownership of the mess is half the work.

I find that when I’m doing any painting, there’s always one element that helps to pull the whole piece together for me. In a pet portrait it’s usually the eyes. I’ve started to paint those first to encourage me to keep on going. In an abstract I need to get some color combination the drew me to the idea in the first place.

The honesty in that caption hits hard. I've got sketchbooks full of pages I'll never show anyone, construction lines that went nowhere, proportions I had to redraw three times. But those messy ones are where the learning actually happens. What were you working on here?
