Getting local eyes on exhibition posts through Instagram
I have a solo exhibition coming up in Lagos next month and I want the posts about it to actually reach people who can physically walk in. Not collectors in London or New York, people who will be in Lekki or Victoria Island on that Saturday.
Most of my following came from posting character design work and process videos, so the audience is global and mostly other digital artists. That is great for engagement but not for filling a room.
I have been experimenting with location tags and local hashtags but the reach still feels random. Wondering if anyone here has found ways to organically push exhibition posts toward a specific city or neighbourhood without running paid ads. Did tagging the venue help? Collaborating with local pages? Anything that actually moved the needle for you?
When I was trying to pull local foot traffic for a group show, the one thing that consistently helped was slapping a location tag on every single post. Not just the announcement, every post. Stories, process clips, even the random behind the scenes stuff. I tagged the venue specifically and the broader city name too, because people search both. Tagging the venue's own account in the post body also helped because their followers started seeing my work in a context that made geographic sense. Your situation with a global digital art audience sounds very familiar, I had the same problem of tons of engagement from people who would never physically show up. The location tagging won't feel dramatic but it compounds over time.
