Instagram Has a Marketing Automation Button Most Artists Don't Know About. This Episode Changed How I Think About DMs.

Patrick and Sarah just walked through a feature that feels like it should've come with sirens. Instagram's automated DM replies are sitting there, waiting, and most artists are scrolling right past them.

What Patrick Explained About Automated DMs

The setup is simple. Someone engages with your post, story, or reel, and Instagram can send them a message automatically. Not a cold blast to everyone. A warm, personal reply to people who just showed they care about your work. Patrick laid out how this works for artists posting studio shots, finished pieces, or works in progress. The second someone comments or reacts, the DM lands in their inbox. It can be a link to your website, a behind-the-scenes story, an invitation to your email list, or just a genuine thank you. The automation doesn't feel robotic when it's done right. It feels like you noticed.

The Part That Stopped Me

Sarah mentioned that most artists think marketing means shouting into the void. Post the art, hope someone sees it, repeat. This feature flips that. It catches people at the exact moment they're paying attention and turns that attention into a conversation. Patrick compared it to handing someone your card right after they compliment your painting at a gallery opening. The timing is everything. You're not interrupting. You're responding.

Why This Matters for Artists Right Now

Social media moves fast. Someone likes your post, keeps scrolling, and forgets you existed thirty seconds later. Automated DMs create a second touchpoint before that happens. They move people from passive scrollers to actual connections. Patrick walked through examples of artists using this to grow their email lists, drive traffic to new collections, and even just make people feel seen. The artists who are doing this aren't tech wizards. They're just using a button Instagram already built.

What I'm Taking From This

The episode made me realize how much energy goes into creating posts and how little goes into what happens after. Patrick's right. The follow-up is where the relationship starts. Automated DMs aren't a replacement for genuine connection. They're a way to start one when you can't be on your phone 24/7. If you've been wondering how to turn engagement into something more than a like count, this episode has the answer.

Super excited to have come across this. I do use ManyChat already as a lead magnet tool to have people enter my monthly art print giveaway. I'm going to look into this as well. Sounds like a great way to introduce someone to our world in a non robotic way (if done right which I hope to do!) Thanks for sharing!
