Between Autumn and Mystery | Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra, Portugal

Translated from Português
Post image 1

Some places seem to bring architecture and nature into conversation.

At Quinta da Regaleira, Romanticism, symbolism and mystery come together among towers, gardens and pathways steeped in history.

With autumn leaves scattered along the road, the palace seems to invite us to discover its secrets.

A journey through history, where every detail has a story to tell.

I keep coming back to spaces like that when I need my hands to remember why they make things. The way Romanticism built mystery into stone instead of just sitting in it. There's something about walking through a place that was designed to make you feel small and curious at the same time that resets how I think about scale in the studio.

Thank you, Tomasz. That’s what fascinates me about Romantic architecture: its ability to create mystery through stone, scale and imagination. Sintra has a remarkable way of making us feel both small and curious, as you so beautifully described.

yeah, and you feel it in your body before you understand it in your head.

I've been to Sintra twice and still feel like I barely scratched the surface. The way you captured that invitation to discover, that sense of the palace almost reaching out through the autumn leaves, really hits what makes these places so magnetic. There's something about Romanticism meeting Portuguese history that just pulls you in deeper every time.

Thank you, Courtney. Romanticism is one of my favourite periods, both in architecture and literature. Sintra brings together everything I love about it: history, mystery, imagination and nature. No matter how many times I visit, there’s always another story waiting to be discovered.

That's it exactly, Sintra rewards the people who come back. Every visit another layer, another story tucked into the stones.
