Pricing

One thing I still can't figure out is how to price my paintings. How do you decide what your artwork is worth?

Hey! The fact that you're wrestling with this honestly instead of just picking a number and hoping is a really good sign.

Pricing art trips people up because it feels like you're putting a number on your talent, but it's actually just math plus positioning. Here's the framework that holds up across artists who sell consistently:

- Start with a square-inch formula (height x width x your dollar-per-square-inch rate) so every piece in the same medium prices predictably. A common starting range for emerging painters is $1 to $3 per square inch, but adjust based on your medium, your experience, and what's actually moving.

- Your materials and time are the FLOOR, not the price. Add up canvas, paint, framing, and a reasonable hourly rate for your time. If your square-inch math lands below that number, bump the rate up until it clears.

- Stay consistent across similar sizes. A collector who sees a 24x30 for $600 and another 24x30 for $1,200 with no clear reason (different medium, different series) gets confused and walks away.

- If you ever sell through galleries, price your direct-to-buyer work at the same retail price and build in a 40-50% margin so a gallery can take their commission without you eating the difference.

The single best move right now: pick your dollar-per-square-inch number, price your next five pieces with it, and see how it feels when you say the number out loud. If you flinch, it's too high or too low. That gut check matters more than any formula.
