Painting

How do you keep your fundamentals sharp when life gets busy?

Last month I had three illustration deadlines land in the same week and my daily sketchbook practice completely fell off. When I picked it back up, my gesture drawings felt stiff again, like my arm had forgotten how to move from the shoulder. It was this weird reset where the looseness I had been building just evaporated.

I know consistent practice is what builds that muscle memory. Drawing every day, even badly, keeps the momentum going. But when project work eats all my hours, I struggle to find space for the unglamorous stuff like construction exercises and perspective drills. And those are exactly the things that make the project work better in the first place.

I have been experimenting with doing just ten minutes of warm up sketches before jumping into deadline work, treating it like stretching before a run. Some days it helps, some days it feels like I am just going through the motions.

How do you hold onto that momentum when your schedule gets chaotic? Do you carve out a non negotiable window for studies, or do you fold practice into the projects themselves?

For what it’s worth, I started painting mini paintings. Something I can complete in an evening (2-3 hours), when I can’t get to the studio. They keep me working in composition and color.

That feeling you described, your arm forgetting how to move from the shoulder, the looseness just evaporating. That particular sting is so real. It is not a sign that you lost something permanent. It is the quiet frustration of watching a rhythm you worked hard to build go still while the rest of your life demanded everything you had.

Three deadlines in one week does not leave room for the unglamorous work. And when you finally come back to the sketchbook, the stiffness feels like proof that you failed at something. But the stiffness is not a verdict. It is just the space between where you left off and where your hand is remembering to go. The muscle memory is not gone. It went quiet, the way a song you know by heart can feel unfamiliar if you haven't hummed it in a while. A few pages in, your shoulder will start to remember.

You are allowed to come back rusty. Picking the sketchbook up again, even when the lines feel wrong, is not starting over. It is continuing.
