Critiques welcome, but I need advice! I did map it out. Measured, marked, measured again. Wiped it off, tried it again and now it’s overworked. The eyes were my biggest problem! The head is tilted and I think I kept trying to do the left eye “level”. It looks like her except the eyes, which are all important in a portrait!

Lovely composition. I agree with the advice given to step away and come back to see this with fresh eyes. A fix that you could consider here is to paint the end of the right half of her eyebrows downwards. While this may not match the reference or her expression in it. It might fix the feeling you have of the eyes not being level.

The worst part about portraits is that you can tell when the eyes are off by a degree nobody would ever notice in a landscape. You're already naming what went wrong, the tilt threw the level read, you chased it, paint got heavy. That's the hardest kind of overworking to fix because you can see the likeness under there. Sometimes stepping away for two days instead of two hours is the only thing that resets your hand enough to touch it lightly again.

I've overworked pieces into the ground trying to fix one thing that was already closer than I thought. With eyes especially, once I start second-guessing the level I end up chasing something that was never actually wrong. What helped me was stepping back for a full day, then coming back and just staring at the reference and the painting side by side without touching anything. Usually the thing I was obsessing over was smaller than the thing I'd created by trying to fix it. The tilt reads right to me from what you're saying about mapping it out twice, sounds like your initial instinct was solid and the overwork came from not trusting it.
