"Grab 'n Go ©," an original mde with pastel, about 15" x 22" unframed, rendered on a sheet of Canson Mi-Teintes rag paper, Steel Gray, using a mix of soft pastel brands, mostly Rembrandt, and NuPastel hard pastel. Some detail work rendered with CarbOthello pastel pencil. A light coat of fixitive was applied. Much of my work is sourced from black-and-white photographs I shot in my hometown in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania for a college art class about 50 years ago. I regret this is one of my least favorite paintings I have made, and I hesitate to post it. It was one of my early originals, and I was—and am—struggling with some basics. Regardless, it's important to acknowledge your possible failures as well as your successes, yes? Curious about more of my work? Visit my website: RandySteelePortfolio.com
The fifty-year span between shooting those photographs and working from them now, that's the part that stays with me here. Most of what I collect from artists about documenting their own work is framed as practical advice for right now, but you're using reference material that predates most of the people reading this. That changes what the image carries, whether you love the painting itself or not.
All true, Owen. Thank you for your kind note.
