I chase the same light and texture thing through a camera lens out in the Shenandoah, so seeing someone pull that off by hand with dry media is honestly kind of humbling. How long have you been working in pastels?
Graphite and charcoal together for wildlife is a real tonal range to manage. The fact that you add pastel on top of that tells me you're not taking shortcuts with light.
