"Queen of Her Domain" is one of my favorite wildlife photos. This older desert bighorn ewe stopped right above the road in Colorado National Monument, followed by several younger ewes and lambs. I love the juxtaposition between the ancient sandstone and the jet trails in the sky above her. It's one of those serendipitous images that tells a story beyond the capture itself.
The sandstone's doing all the lifting here, that textural contrast with the contrails turns what could've been a straightforward animal portrait into something with actual depth. The ewe's placement right at that visual intersection makes the frame. Serendipity only works when you're ready for it.
That juxtaposition you caught, the ancient rock and the jet trails, is what makes this stick. I've spent so many mornings waiting for light on the same ridge, trying to time something just right, and then a ewe just stops, looks back, and gives you the whole frame. The ones that work best for me are usually the ones I didn't plan, just showed up and stayed quiet long enough.

I can see why this is one of your favourites. Her posture against all that open blue gives her such presence, and the negative space makes the image especially strong. I also like that you kept the jet trails — there is something fascinating about that contrast between the ancient sandstone, the wild animal and those small traces of the human world above her. “Queen of Her Domain” suits her perfectly.
