Cardinals are the state bird of Ohio, but not found much in my current state of Colorado. When I go home to visit family I take every opportunity to get out and look for these colorful birds. This was taken on Thanksgiving week along the Towpath trail in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park!
I waited forty minutes once for the right light on a cardinal perched in snow-covered berries back in Leipzig. Thanksgiving week light in Ohio must have been perfect for that red.

I know that feeling, waiting all year for a shot you can't get at home. The way cardinals pop against snow or bare branches, that red is almost unreal. I spent years chasing subjects I thought I should be shooting before I realized the best work comes from what you actually miss when you're away from it.
