Waiting for the Right Wave

Sometimes photography is simply about waiting.

I watched the Atlantic for a few minutes as each new set of waves redrew the surface, until the lines, light and movement came together the way I wanted to remember them.

No rush. Just observation, patience, and a familiar sea.

Sometimes life is about waiting too.

I always love how the surface of the water can reflect what lies beneath the surface of the water.

A good sailor can read the surface and tell you what is going on beneath the water.

A good sail or knows how to wait while reading the water.

Exactly, Mike. I think “reading the water” is a wonderful way of putting it. I grew up with the sea, so observing it has always come naturally to me. When I photograph it, I often wait and watch how the waves, light and movement are changing before deciding when to take the photograph. Sometimes a few minutes make all the difference. Thank you — I really enjoyed your perspective.
