Open Call: Magic Hour — Study №01 is Live

Study №01 - Magic Hour (all art genres/types welcome)

Rules: Post an image via a comment that fits the theme

  • 1 piece only

  • Include the title of the piece

  • If you would like to include a description of how your piece fits the theme you can do so. (Not mandatory)

  • Study runs for one week with winner announced Fri May 1st.

  • Upvote the pieces you absolutely love.

Theme: Magic Hour

Magic Hour (also called the "golden hour" in many contexts) refers to the brief period of exceptional natural light around sunrise and sunset that artists, photographers, and filmmakers prize for its transformative, flattering, and atmospheric qualities

Notes: This is our first one so lets have fun with it and super open to feedback so if you have some please do leave it 🙏

  • To make this exercise more fun every entrant is going to two receive two bespoke to your art, social media graphics (via email) that you can post to show off and encourage folks to vote for you. 1 formatted for feeds and 1 formatted for stories. The graphics should offer a nice change of pace for your social profiles + its a bit of a flex (big undertaking to do this, but you guys are worth it)

  • Decided to go with a magazine theme as I feel like all of you should have your art on the front of a magazine! 😎

  • If Study goes well, if you guys enjoy it, if the social media graphics are helpful and you enjoy the challenge; We can make it weekly and give it it's own community.

  • Not every theme will be perfect for every artist depending on your subject matter material so plan is to change it up weekly to accomodate all

  • If you have ideas for how to improve it leave me a comment as I want to hear it.

You can enter 👇 by leaving a comment with your image and title and description(optional) and good luck!

My Golden Hour painting is Glorious Sunset, acrylics on canvas board, 13” x 13”. As I live near the sea and walk on this beach regularly I get to see some gorgeous sunsets, and wanted to suggest the fleeting colours and light effects as Monet did ( without the benefit of colour photography!) My father-in-law Sir Ivan Sutherland gave Dunstanburgh Castle to the National Trust in 1961 and you can see it in the distance in my painting. I often paint this view in different light effects as it means so much to me and is a fabulous place to walk. Jan Sutherland-Calderwood.

The family story enhances this piece quite a bit. Well done.

Thank you Patrick. You are so quick off the mark!

Should I pay to have CoPilot “ In Your Voice”? Would you advise this?

I will keep on implementing your very good advice for my Instagram and thank you.

Jan.

I'm AFK, so the caption will be brief. The piece is titled "Tides and Time" and it was made during the very last moment of golden hour. You can actually see the terminator between blue and golden hour in the sky. Sort of a "thesis" image for me.

Iberian lynx kitten is drinking at the watering hole during the golden hour. I was photographing these cats in Spain in July. This meant sitting in a photo hide for about 10 hours a day in crazy high temperatures but it was totally worth it.

It certainly was worth it! Wonderful image!

Hi Patrick. I received the email, but didn’t see a caption.

0
Patrick ShanahanApr 24, 2026

You can use whatever caption you like. Didn't create one for this go round but I will on the next one. On this one I just needed to make sure my system could even do this.

I am really pleased with it so far; generating graphics is a pain in the butt, and to be able to get them right to your email, download and post... is just handy and nice I think.

Standing in a meadow with the crowd, waiting and hoping for magic to happen, our patience paid off when the clouds lifted just enough to see the King’s Chair above the face of Half Dome, during golden hour this February day at Yosemite.

Riverlight Reverie

This simple painting using simple washes of color represents my healing journey. My first attempt to paint after my brain injury last fall. I had very little control of my hand and the washes were pretty untamed. The imperfections and crooked lines created character. This looks alot like My recovery process, a little messy but making progress. New beginnings that opened a new perspective in how I see myself as a creator.

This photograph called "Summer Sunset" was taken in Punta del Este, Uruguay and is one of my favourite places to visit. The sky there is so special, with incredible blues during the day. And at sunset, the colours change to a golden orange depending on the day. Sometimes the sky is purple and pink at sunset. As you can imagine I have hundreds of photos taken over the years lol The sky never stops amazing me with its beauty. Hope you like this photo!

REFLECTION

REFLECTION was captured near San Clemente Island, California approximately 60 miles west of San Diego while I was scouting hard for one last bluefin before the lights went out. I keep my camera on the dash now instead of in the v-berth to enable minimal friction when the time presents itself. Days are made and lost out here during Golden Hour, sometimes Magic, always spectacular. The best workdays are when I catch the desired species and capture a scene like this.

"Breathless" was painted right after I did this incredibly challenging hike up the mountains in Aptos, CA. I'd been going crazy all day at work, frustrated, and needed to work it all off. I got home, threw on my hiking clothes and out the door I went. By the time I got to the top of the hill, I was, literally breathless. And then I became breathless as I saw this view unfold as the sun began setting over the different nooks and crannies of the coastline. It was a Friday night and the next morning I got up and could not stop painting until I had captured what I saw.

Dark Hug of Time (24 x 24, oil and cold wax) evokes the magical hour where at the end of the day when it's time to rest and reflect on where you've been and how you've come to be here. As darkness ensues the glow of the fading light wraps itself around like a warm hug.

"Beach Skies Blue" reveals the ever-shifting dance between sky and sea at sunset, where deep blues yield to warm pinks and purples above the gunmetal ocean. Ideal for anchoring your space with a calm yet dynamic reminder of Cape Cod's distinctive light.

This image illustrates the connection between sea and sky, bringing their energetic dialogue into your space. It’s a remarkable conversation piece and addition to any room or collection.

Golden Hour. Probably my most favorite time. In the morning and in the evening. I have created a whole body of work that is dedicated to the sunrise outside my bedroom window. There are times when I can’t get out of bed due to the MS, but I always wake up feeling hopeful because of the glorious color that shines in through my window. I can honestly say that I have seen mint greens sack greens of course the vibrant oranges and reds and periwinkle and lavender. Never the same one twice. This particular piece, Mountain song, was my first painted sunrise. It has a special place in my heart. After completing it, I felt more confident as a painter. I hope you all enjoy it. Joy and light to you all.

Wharariki Sunset.

During a two month road trip around New Zealand in 2024 I spent 3 nights at this location, back on this day it had been grey and overcast with rain off and on all day, I had thought about heading back to the campsite with no hope of seeing a sunset, I was so glad I did as I saw a glimmer of orange hue at the arch at the end of the headland, moments later I was treated to an almost biblical scene with this dramatic sunset light cast in front of me surrounded by the dark moody clouds, five minutes later it was pitch dark and pouring with rain.

Daria ShitikovaApr 24, 2026

“Clouds. Heavenly” feels like a quiet conversation between earth and sky — a moment when light softens, birds stitch the air with motion, and the horizon exhales. The palette is deliberately tender: peachy golds melt into muted blues and greys, creating a gentle gradient that reads as warmth settling into cool. That tonal shift is what gives the image its calming, almost hymn-like quality.

The open sky invites the viewer’s eye to move with the birds, to imagine the air beneath their wings. The flock becomes a metaphor for travel, trust, and the small choreography of daily life — moments that repeat themselves with quiet dignity. For many, it will read as a reminder to pause and follow the slow, inevitable arc of change.

“Clouds. Heavenly” is more than a pretty view — it’s a quiet argument for looking up, for honoring transitions, and for finding lift in the ordinary.

Great idea Patrick - a theme a week. What a star.

This was one of the most amazing and colourful sunrises I have ever experienced. I was at Inspiration Point in Bryce Canyon set up on my tripod for the low light exposure when the sky just came ablaze. I was so happy to be on the tripod as this was to be a panorama. This image is a combination of six different exposures stitched together in PS.

"Fiery Sky and Soft Dunes" captures the stunning sunset over New Mexico's White Sands National Monument. The vibrant colors of the sky blend seamlessly with the soft, undulating dunes, creating a serene yet dramatic landscape. Golden hour across the Utah desert where I live creates both a dreamy warmth and fiery heat at once. It's in that late afternoon hour just before sunset when life is quiet and still, the colors glowing soft and bright. At the same time, it feels like the scorching heat of the day is being held in a pulsing abeyance, as if holding its breath waiting for the coolness and busy nocturnal activity that only a night in the high desert brings. This is my most recent finished painting, "Spring's Warm Embrace" 20"x24" oil on canvas. (This is my writing, btw; NOT AI writing. )

Rising Sun October 8th
