Fire And Rain

Post image 1

I created this in Adobe Illustrator. It is an enlarged area taken from a digital vector illustration I had produced in 2023 which ended up as an outrageous colourful spikey graphic which I titled 21st Century Schizoid Man - very psychedelic. I can't remember the technique exactly as it was completely experimental... Amazingly it starting life as an organic, amoeba-like blob shape which I messed around with using various effects 60 different layers and multi-colours.

I was listening to James Taylor's album "Sweet Baby James" and I looked at the central section, enlarged it and voila, there it was, staring me in the face "Fire and Rain". I've never produced it as a print or canvas but maybe I should.
What do you think?

"I've seen fire and I've seen rain

I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end

I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend

But I always thought that I'd see you again"

Undeniably one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Thank you James Taylor.

Yeah I guess, I wasn't keen to get involved but felt I had nothing to lose so gave it a shot. Absolute waste of time - for me that is - it was my mate in California that handled it I just gave him some images. Full of very rude scammers!!!

Hi Michele. Pleased you are going with the flow, let it happen. I didn't have to start all over again as it is a digital image it was the connection with the music I was listening to and what I saw within the Schizoid Man image I created. The shapes and colours of red and blue predominantely that made me turn the enlarged section into "Fire and Rain". I guess I could start all over again, now that I've found the "Blob", just got to remember how I did it! Yeah I do have 21st Century Schizoid Man and a few derivatives, they've been sitting in my archives since '23. Many thanks ✌🏼

Hi Suki, many thanks. Yes in this instance, it was the connection with the music I was listening to and what I saw within the Schizoid Man image, the shape and colours of red and blue predominantely that made me turn the enlarged section into "Fire and Rain". TBH I produced 21st Century Schizoid Man and a few derivatives for NFT's which at the time I had a mate in SF who said that's the way to go. Thankfully it wasn't, anyway its been sitting in my archives since '23. I think you are right it's such a statement piece it needs to living large on a wall somewhere and that's the million dollar question, where and who'd have it ? ✌🏼

The NFT era ate a lot of good work that way, but yours lived long enough to matter differently now.

Thanks Luther, appreciate your views. The original rendition, 21st Century Schizoid Man was me just experimenting and although I liked the wild image, it was the connection with the music I was listening to and what I saw within the image, the shape and colours that made me turn Schizoid Man into "Fire and Rain"

That listening-first move is the one. The song finding the shape inside the noise, that's when you know what to keep.

You created this starting with an amoeba blob like figure. Using so many techniques, colors, old creations, and I'm sure much more, you wound up creating this dynomite, colorful, outrageous piece. I find that my pieces that started off as experimental turn out to be some of my best work. I'm relaxed and just going with the flow listening to some great music. I have to say that none of mine turned out to be such a statement piece, as yours did. Once you started all over again, how ling did this take to make? By the way, I love how this turned out and I definitely love the song. Do you have the original piece that this began with?

The title came from the listening, not the other way around. That's the part that gets me. You weren't hunting for Fire and Rain in the shapes, you were just working and it surfaced because Taylor was in the room. Most people force the music reference onto the piece after, but yours grew into it. Also brave to not print it yet when it clearly wants to live large somewhere.

The zoom choice is the move here. Starting with chaos and lifting out the part that had its own logic, that's how you find the piece inside the experiment. Sixty layers is a lot of pressure to let go of, but you did.
