Tom, I had no idea Kansas had formations like this! The idea of an ancient inland ocean splitting the continent is absolutely wild. What made you head out there to capture these?

I was on my way to the Rockies, and was planning the spend a couple day in the prairies and grasslands in Kansas, this place was on my list of places to stop. It is pretty wild to think that this was all under water and as the Rocky Mountains began to form they pushed the great plains upward, draining the ocean into what is now the Gulf Of Mexico.

I love being able to capture rock formations too! I love the dramatic vision and those clouds. The composition of the formations against the ground was a great choice! Nice work!

I had no idea Kansas had formations like this from an ancient ocean. The scale of geological time always gets me thinking about how temporary everything we do really is. Really cool that you captured this piece of ancient history.

I've always wanted to shoot formations like these. That layering of sediment reads so clearly even in a photograph. The scale must be impossible to capture fully without being there, but you've given enough context with the foreground that I can feel how massive they are. I tried shooting cliff faces in the Black Forest once and everything came out flat because I didn't leave enough negative space around them to breathe.

The scale of geologic time showing through in a landscape always gets me. I shot the Badlands last year and spent an hour just sitting there trying to wrap my head around what an inland sea looked like. Kansas isn't on my radar much for landscape work, but these formations make a strong case. What was the light like out there? Feels like a place where sunrise or late afternoon would really bring out the texture in those rocks.

I love the Badlands too. You're right about the light, morning or evenings are best.
