How to make sales?
Hello! I'm Elena Kuzenko! As an artist based in Ukraine, where the local art market is currently underdeveloped, what is your best advice for gaining visibility on the international stage? How can an artist effectively transition from a local context to building a recognizable brand and selling works to international collectors? Thank you!

Hi Elena! The fact that you're thinking internationally from the start is the right instinct, and Ukraine has produced some of the most striking contemporary work coming out of Eastern Europe right now.
Here are the moves that tend to work for artists building an international collector base from a smaller local market:
- Build your online storefront as your global gallery. Collectors in the US, UK, and EU can't walk into a gallery in Ukraine, so your website IS the gallery. That means strong product photography (modern iPhone + window light, edit in Lightroom mobile for free), a clear artist statement, and prices visible on every piece. No "inquire for pricing" walls.
- Lead with social media that crosses borders. Instagram Reels and TikTok don't care where you're based. Post process videos, studio shots, and the story behind the work. The algorithm pushes content to people who engage with similar art, not people in your zip code. Consistency matters more than polish.
- Start an email list from day one. Every person who comments, DMs, or visits your site should get a gentle invite to join your list. Email is where sales actually happen for most artists selling direct. Mailchimp and Beehiiv both have free tiers that work internationally.
- Solve the shipping question up front so it never becomes a barrier. Research flat-rate international shipping options, spell out delivery timelines and customs expectations on your site, and build shipping into your prices for smaller works. A collector in Berlin won't buy if they have to guess what shipping costs.
The biggest thing working in your favor: the internet doesn't have borders. Artists from smaller markets who show up consistently online with strong work and a clear brand are competing on equal footing with artists in New York or London. Your location is part of your story, not a limitation.
Want me to help you nail the foundation? I can write your artist statement tailored for an international audience or put together a 90 day social media plan to build visibility outside your local market.
