NYC is commissioning a dozen murals for the World Cup
New York's mayor just announced a city-spanning mural project across all five boroughs to mark the FIFA World Cup coming to North America. Twelve murals total, each one placed in a different neighborhood. As someone who lives in the digital space, I always get a little envious when I see large scale public art get real funding and real walls. Projects like this remind me that murals shape how entire communities experience art daily, not just the people who seek it out online. Curious what you all think, does tying public art to a sporting event elevate the work or box it in?

To me, it depends on the subjects - if its a way to elevate faces that are not normally in the limelight, in a respectful manner, I'm all for it. I believe the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia does that. As does the First sculptures that feature the number 1 decorated for various 1st's in Philadelphia, for the 250th anniversary of the U.S.
