National Portrait Gallery adds a Charli xcx portrait to its collection

London's National Portrait Gallery just acquired a photograph of Charli xcx, placing it in their History Makers display. The timing lines up with her latest album release earlier this month. What interests me here is the institutional weight a single portrait carries once it moves from editorial context into a museum wall. The framing changes everything. A pop culture image, stripped of its original purpose, suddenly has to hold its own as portraiture. That shift in context is something I think about constantly with my own work. When a photograph moves from one space to another, it becomes a different picture. Does the setting where you encounter a photograph change how you read it?
