Henri Cartier-Bresson born — 1908

On August 22, 1908, Henri Cartier-Bresson was born in Chanteloup-en-Brie, France. He would become one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century, a master of candid street photography and a pioneer of photojournalism.
Cartier-Bresson carried a small Leica camera through the streets of Europe, Asia, and the Americas, capturing what he called the decisive moment: that fraction of a second when composition, light, and human gesture align in perfect balance. His work helped establish photography as a serious art form, bridging the gap between documentary recording and aesthetic expression. He cofounded Magnum Photos in 1947, an agency that gave photographers control over their own work and set new standards for journalistic integrity.
His insistence on finding beauty in the everyday, on waiting patiently for the world to reveal itself rather than forcing a scene, remains a lesson for any artist working with observation and timing.
