"Sisters in Arms ©," a recently completed original done with pastel, about 15" x 22" unframed, rendered on a sheet of Canson Mi-Teintes rag paper, Steel Gray, using a mix of soft pastel brands, mostly Rembrandt, and NuPastel hard pastel. Some detail work rendered with CarbOthello pastel pencil. A light coat of Lascaux fixitive was applied. Much of my work is sourced from black-and-white photographs I shot in my hometown in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania for a college art class about 50 years ago. Curious about more of my work? I worked from a college photo once, twenty years later, and it was strange how much I could still see in it that I missed when I was standing there. The soft pastels laid over hard pastel for detail is something I've watched pastel painters do and always respected, you get both the mass and the edge without fussing it to death. Fifty years is a long time for a photograph to wait, and the fact that it still had something to say makes me think you saw more than the assignment asked for back then.
