Sharing a WIP, some of the face tones need darkening still, and the side of the head needs to be full black/ fur detail but making slow steady progress. Its on A4.

I've been working A4 for years and there's this moment halfway through where you can feel the piece starting to lock in, where you know the end's actually going to get there. That moment you're describing, knowing exactly what still needs doing, means you're already past the hard part.

Yeah, that clicking-in moment is when you know you've actually got something.

At times, the end can always seem so far away in those initial stages! Although it's a cliché but I remind myself to 'trust the process' through those initial phases.

Slow steady progress is the real thing. There's something about working a piece in stages like this that keeps you honest with the animal, lets you see where the light actually sits instead of forcing it all at once.

I feel that this is a learned skill that I'm still learning. There should be no time pressure to a piece, and like you say, it allows you to take a step back and focus on the right things.

That no-pressure approach is the only one that actually works, yeah. When you're not racing against time, you catch the things that would have disappeared in one sitting, the small shifts in how light moves through a form.

I realised it also helps to withdraw from the image for a while. It's too easy to get immersed and lose perspective at times. Walking away and re focusing after a time period really helps
