Just finished this one. Drawn to the original image as I felt it was unique given that it would appear the Rhino appears to be tearful. As yet not sure if a background should be added or not

I'd leave the background as is. That eye already carries everything, and the tearfulness you're seeing reads clearly without competition. Sometimes the fewer elements, the stronger the moment.

Thank you and @Sadie Webb , this was my original thought to leave it as just the image. I considered blacking out the background but then quickly changed my mind as I felt this would have a negative impact on the contrasts.

The expression you caught is what makes it. I'd leave the background as is, adding more might pull focus from what you saw in that moment, the tearfulness you noticed. Sometimes the empty space around a subject does more work than we think it will.

It is wonderful. I think the soft tones in the subject would be overpowered with a background unless you were to do an almost black smooth background. But the way it is now really does the trick. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you @Lyn Haney - artist for you kind words. I think it will stay like this. Pure black background would have been my other choice but there would be no going back if it didn't work! This image has made me want to explore more emotive animal pictures!
