I've never worked in steel or glass, but I get wanting something you can walk around. When I'm stuck on a canvas I'll go sand a frame or stretch something just to move my hands through a different kind of problem. The dragonflies sound like a good break from whatever your main work is.
So glad to hear that you sand and stretch and I hope build your own bands and stretchers. Those are all common ground for me.

Building your own stretchers changes how you think about the work. There's something about making the frame that makes you more careful with what goes on it.
